I cannot even begin to tell you how angry I am at the behavior of those idiots at Bethpage Black at the Ryder Cup, and as someone who played at golf, though never very well, I want to sincerely apologize to the European Team, their Captains, and especially their families, for the extremely rude and abusive behavior of the American fans. I am also furious at the PGA of America for not nipping this in the very beginning by finding the main agitators and very publicly ejecting them, and for giving a foul-mouthed person like Heather McMahon a microphone so she could use it to lead a chant of 'F**k You Rory' on the first tee—appalling. Where in hell was the security for this huge event, finally getting a large presence of NY State Police late in the second day was way too late.
Members of the USA Team are also not without fault. American Captain Keegan Bradley, who I am a big fan of, should have stepped in and gotten on that first tee microphone and told the crowd that while he and the American Team thanked them for their support, it should never be disrespectful, rude, or abusive. As for the players, they saw what was happening and did little to stop it, and before you ask me how, I can think of several things—like pointing out those they saw shouting as Rory was about to putt, or going over and publicly embarrassing them by telling them to shut up, though I am not sure it is possible to embarrass a NY fan.
I know the predominantly Irish fans who will be attending in two years at beautiful Adare Manor will show us how it should be done, though we do not deserve it.
Shameful American Behavior
