I was a 1st Lieutenant serving with the 25th Infantry Division in Vietnam in 1968, I was there in country when the My Lai massacre stained the very honor of the U.S. Army. That day was one of the darkest in our history, not just because of the horrific loss of innocent life, but because of the catastrophic failure of leadership and the absolute breakdown of the chain of command.
Let's be perfectly clear: what happened at My Lai was not just a tragedy; it was a crime. And it was a crime committed by men who should have known better. The fact that Non-Commissioned Officers (NCOs) on the ground, alongside the disgraced Lieutenant William Calley, carried out those illegal orders is a deep and lasting shame.
You might ask, 'How could they have known the orders were illegal?' The answer is simple: they were trained to know. I can personally attest to the fact that every soldier, and especially every NCO and Commissioned Officer, receives training on the Law of Land Warfare and what constitutes a legal order. We were taught how to identify an illegal order, how to refuse it, and what orders we could not give. This isn't some obscure bit of knowledge; it's a fundamental part of our training.
So, as someone who has three times taken an oath to support and defend the Constitution of the United States, I find the abject stupidity of Senators, Slotkin, and Kelly, Representatives Crow, Deluzio, Goodlander, and Houlahan to be not just offensive, but utterly disgraceful. To denigrate the men and women of our armed forces with a TikTok video that assumes they are as ignorant as they are is a slap in the face to every single one of us who has ever worn the uniform.
And by the way, I would love for someone to tell me exactly what illegal order has been given and who gave it. Because from where I'm standing, the only thing I see is a profound and insulting ignorance of the principles we live by and are sworn to uphold.
