The Real Job Description of Congress

Post Image

Why are the people we elect to represent us not solving the country's problems? Why do they think that we sent them there to grab as much money as possible for their constituency? But the problem is that other than their 'donors' (whose sole purpose is to buy influence) and lobbyists (whose sole purpose is to get the language they want written into bills, be damned the needs of the constituency) and a very small group of people living in their district who may be directly affected (at max in most cases 2%), no one is paying attention. Ninety-eight percent have no clue what they are doing other than what they proclaim they've done—i.e., 'I was a sponsor on HR 2565989 (along with every other member of my party but no one from the other party).' Unfortunately, now we no longer believe a word they speak.

If someone were to write a job description for Congress based on things they actually do, this is what I think it would look like:

1. Raise money for reelection campaign.

2. In any hearing, ask as many 'Gotcha Questions' as possible of members of the Administration's appointees (when they are from the opposition's party) or 'Softball Questions' when it's your party so that you can use video clips on Instagram or TikTok or in your next campaign.

3. Raise money for reelection campaign.

4. Get as much face time as possible on the 'Sunday Talk Shows' and the cable networks so that you can use video clips in your next campaign.

5. Raise money for reelection campaign.

6. Pontificate as often as possible on C-SPAN to the staff member in the chamber (because there is nobody else there).

7. Raise money for reelection campaign.

8. Constantly and vociferously keep telling anyone who sticks a microphone in your face why 'X' problem needs to be fixed, and why 'Y' problem needs our full attention and needs to be fixed, and that problem 'Z' is a mess and we need to fix it quickly.

9. Raise money for reelection campaign.

The thing we seldom hear from these imbeciles is that they solved 'X' in a bipartisan manner or solved 'Y' in a bipartisan manner or, God forbid, that we all agreed and solved 'Z' and there was a lot of 'compromise' on both sides but in the end, it passed with a huge majority because it was good for the entire country.
