This is an imbecilic game played equally by both political parties and I am at a loss on how to stop it.
According to now Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, he has worked hard to have the House follow its own rules that require all appropriations bills go through the relevant committees and be voted out of committee before the entire House can vote on it, and the current appropriations bill has not yet been voted out of committee, so he needs a little more time for that process to complete (whether that is true or not is totally irrelevant). Rather than shut the government down, he proposed a 'simple clean stopgap funding proposal' in the form of a short-term continuing resolution (CR) to fund the government through November 21st.
When Biden was President, the Democrats repeatedly voted to extend federal funding with temporary CRs, but not now unless it includes an extension of expiring Affordable Care Act subsidies and in a government funding measure, among other priorities such as giving healthcare back to some 15 million people the Democrats claim lost it in previous legislation.
Whether the proposed CR is 'clean' I do not know, but what I do know is that this is all a sham and the only purpose for it is to be able to blame the other. Remember as a child when you saw, or maybe even participated in, this childish game: "Johnny did it, wasn't me." That's what this is and it is childish, and it is regularly done by both sides of the aisle. 'We the people' be damned—the country's needs are unimportant. "Prove me wrong."
